The Marine Technical Search Team with @lacolifeguards conducted a specialized training focused on two advanced tools: SONAR EMILY and AquaEye.

SONAR EMILY is a remote-operated rescue vessel equipped with high-resolution sonar imaging and GPS, capable of transmitting live underwater scans from up to 400 meters offshore.

AquaEye is a handheld sonar device that uses artificial intelligence to scan underwater in low visibility conditions, covering up to 8,000 square meters in under five minutes.

This training helps lifeguards stay prepared with the latest technology to support faster, safer, and more effective search and rescue operations.

This last weekend, we said goodbye to Retired Ocean Lifeguard Steve Morgan with a beautiful paddle-out ceremony and reception in Hermosa Beach. Morgan retired in 2012 after 52 years of service. As the father of Rescue Boat Captain Tyler Morgan and Ocean Lifeguard Tandis Morgan, he leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished for years to come. 📷: @joel77st 💙🌊

This past weekend, with the warmer weather, @lacolifeguards saw plenty of activity at the beach, including a number of ocean rescues. Here’s a quick recap of some of those rescues captured by @surfline cam rewind.

We recently teamed up with Redondo Union High School and the @southbayboardriders to host our annual S.A.L.T. program—Surfer Awareness of Lifesaving Techniques. This course teaches surfers how to recognize distressed swimmers and equips them with the skills to take lifesaving action.

Participants learned ocean rescue techniques, CPR, and first aid, helping them build essential skills to step in during moments of crisis. Thanks everyone for coming out and look forward to doing it again soon!

Missed out? There’s still one more chance to train before tryouts. Space is limited to 30 participants per class—register now to secure your spot.

As you begin returning to the beach, you’ll notice more staffed lifeguard towers throughout the county—and for good reason. Springtime is notorious for hazardous ocean conditions. So, when you head down, be sure to stay near an open lifeguard tower and check in with the lifeguard before entering the water. Have fun and stay safe! Photo: @mattolivarphotography

Our @lacolifeguards Baywatch Avalon crew recently conducted advanced rope rescue training in Avalon, Catalina Island. While lifeguards are best known for their work on the water, they are also trained to respond to emergencies on land, including cliff rescues, medical aid in remote areas, and backcountry search & rescue.

With Catalina’s unique terrain and isolated location, interagency cooperation is critical. @lacolifeguards @avalon_firefighters_2295 and @lasdhq regularly train together to ensure seamless response when duty calls—whether on the ocean, cliffs, or rugged trails.
