Historically, ocean temperatures in the Santa Monica Bay average 62°F in November and 59.2°F in December. Right now, water temps have begun to dip slightly over the past week, sitting at 63.3°F. Overall, they’ve stayed surprisingly warm this Fall, but how long will that last?

This week, @lacolifeguards developed and coordinated a multi-agency training scenario with @lacountyfd, @uscg_airstation_ventura, @redondobeachfiredepartment, and @palosverdesestatespd simulating an overturned vessel sending multiple victims into the water off the Palos Verdes coast. Lifeguard, fire, and law enforcement resources worked together to perform water rescue operations, patient triage, treatment and transport, technical rescue, and vessel stabilization.

These multi-agency exercises strengthen coordination and operational readiness, ensuring that when real emergencies occur, we can provide the highest level of service to the public.

From concerts to NFL games, our lifeguards are trained EMTs who assist with on-site medical responses and ensure public safety in and around the venue’s water features.

Whether it’s the beach or the stadium, our mission remains the same — protecting the community we care about and ensuring it members go home safely.

Additionally, an Ocean Water Quality Rain Advisory is in effect until at least Wednesday, November 19, at 8:00 AM. Avoid all water contact for 72 hours after rainfall. For more information, check @lapublichealth

Finding the remaining bits of sunshine before a new low-pressure system starts moving in Thursday and with it bringing some cooler air temperatures, precipitation, and reduced coastal visibility. Stay tuned here for updates and any advisories that may be released.

@lacolifeguards hosted a weeklong Marine Firefighting Course for both our personnel and outside agencies, designed to strengthen coordination and readiness for marine fire incidents.

Throughout the week, participants took part in classroom sessions and hands-on drills covering fire behavior, strategy and tactics, ICS, and hazmat awareness, followed by field evolutions simulating boat fires at dock, moored, adrift, and at anchor.

Training like this ensures our lifeguards and partner agencies remain sharp, connected, and prepared for anything on the water. Huge thanks to everyone who made this year’s course possible.

A High Surf Advisory has been issued by @nwslosangeles for the Los Angeles County coastline, with a new swell filling in today and lasting through tomorrow—bringing waves in the shoulder- to overhead range. Combined with morning high tides, there is also an increased risk of coastal flooding through tomorrow. Please make sure to stay off rocks and jetties, know your limits, and check in with a @lacolifeguards for the latest ocean conditions and any potential hazards.
